For the last year or so, Urban Outfitters has created a number of capsule collections with smaller designers.
Its a great way for those of us with less disposable cash to access the ideas and styles of some up-and-coming designers (and, hopefully, they get exposed to new audiences who will eventually buy their main lines)

The fall pieces have been coming out in drips and draps: This silk dress from Rapscallion by Samatha Pleet is one of my favorite pieces. It looks so comfy -- and yet dressed-up!
And at $68 USD its a bit of a steal!

So apparently I have a big thing for embellished shoulders right now.
Browsing through Shopbop this morning, my cursor hovered over this little beauty from Robert Rodriguez: an awesome beaded shoulder jean jacket!

Not sure I love the tuxedo tails -- this would have been stronger as a straight bomber -- but overall I love the look and the emphasis on the shoulders. The mix of light denim and black rhinestones is super hot, though for the price (almost $700 for a jean jacket!) this is something try at home! Let's have a closer look:

Seriously I wished I had learned about this earlier because now its sold out -- United Bamboo released a limited edition 2010 calendar featuring cats in outfits from their ready-to-wear collection. How friggin awesome!!!

Just a quick one today -- but have you seen the shoes that Alexander McQueen sent down the runway for Spring RTW?
They are completely out of this world both in look and height -- 10 inches!!

Sorry -- I know there are a lot here but I just couldn't help myself -- have you ever seen anything so fantastic?? They are somehow both rugged and rustic as well as space-agey. Love!

Ok ... so we're just in the first stages of fall, but I'm already looking forward to the spring collections!

Isabel Marant's Spring RTW collection was full of bright pinks: but I'm especially loving her almost Robinhood-esque fuscia tunics and slouchy boots. Very wearable but oh so hot!

I sometimes think I live in a perpetual state of clothing denial.
Despite the quickly dropping temperatures (quicker than usual it seems) I'm still lusting after cute little dresses.

Take this little cocktail dress from camilla and marc at Shopbop:

So cute for sure -- I just love the lace and mesh overlays.
But let's be honest: for me to wear this out in icy Toronto, I would definitely be pairing it with tights and likely with a sweater that, despite all my best intentions, wouldn't be removed for the whole night.

While we've already highlighted strong shoulders, it is worthwhile to take another look with all the new fall pieces flooding the stores.

I know it’s a bit 80s but I can't help but love the look: its such a strong shape but one that doesn't overwhelm the body.
These shoulders add drama but without shouting.
And I really like the move away from the poof shoulder.

I am really loving this Alberta Ferretti dress on netaporter.com
The shoulder detail is just amazing: very feminine warrior chic -- and the combination with the short sleeves and the higher neck is striking.

This could be cool to try and replicate (or at least produce an homage to) using a thin black turtleneck dress combined with sequin patches …. Hmmmm I think I have a weekend project!

I'm not usually a high boot person.
But last year's cold winter (and expectations for this year brrrr) have me reconsidering high boots.
And, even more importantly, the amazing crop of over the knee boots this year has me dreaming of leather to my thigh :)

Here are some of my favs:

I'm loving these boots from CO-OP by Barney:

The quilted shaft up the back of the boot is very biker-cool but the overall shape remains feminine.
But the price combined with the heel (hmm walking through slush, snow and ice in a heel) make these highly unlikely for me.

I was seriously considering this pair by Sweet Life by Dolce Vita, until I read the reviews :(
That said, they are still a very cute boot at a very nice price, so even with the quality issues they are still a decent option:

There is also the classic boot by Loeffler Randall.
In my opinion, Loeffler Randall was the one to start this shape for flat boots: slim, not quite pointy toe coupled with a very slight wedge. This season we also get the addition of buckles for a slightly tougher look:

A nice version of the Loeffler Randall shape is seen in Dolce Vita's Eve Above the Knee boot. A great looking boot at a pretty decent price -- I think I'm going to kick myself for not getting these sooner especially now that the black is sold out in my size :(

Since getting engaged I've been on the hunt for the right dress.

If the fact that we were together so long before getting engaged is any clue, we're not exactly the traditional couple.
I didn't spend my childhood years dreaming about getting married.
And, while we've been more than 100% committed for a while, its only been recently that either of us even considered that we might tie the knot.

So, I'm really not interested in getting an overly traditional gown -- in fact, I've been approaching this more as a way to get a super-hot designer dress that I wouldn't usually have the excuse to buy :)

Of course, I do have to deal with other people's expectations (to a certain extent) and with my own budget (to a much greater extent) but here are some of my first cracks at finding a dress. Some of these are fairly traditional (i.e. long and neutral coloured) but I think they are all pretty fun!

I love this Marchesa gown on net-a-porter. It is unfortunately sold out (as if it was an option given the price!) but I love the shape and the colour -- still within a traditional palate but a much more fresh take. And really, doesn't it look like fun to wear!

I am looking for something short but I like the understated elegance of this:

With all the browsing that I've been doing it has given me license to try on dresses that I wouldn't usually even pick up.
I've always thought all the chatter around the Herve Leger bandage dresses was just that, chatter. But recent celeb sightings inspired me to have a closer look and just yesterday I pulled a coral Herve Leger mini into the change room with me. I must admit it was pretty fabulous on!
I'm going to try and track down this dress to try on -- might be a bit of an unconventional dress for a wedding but I think it would be super hot!

So I know its been a while.
I don't really have an excuse except to say that, well, life has been happening.
After nearly 10 years together, my BF and I got engaged at the end of July.
... followed by two weddings of close friends -- both requiring decently big trips -- Vancouver than Montana!

And than we had a visit by the newest addition to our extended family, the cutest little lady-killer in training, one of our best friend's sons . . . and he brought his parents :)

So its been a bit of a time in terms of big events -- that coupled with lots of small ones have made the past few months literally fly by!

But, I'm hoping -- and planning -- to get back to sharing on this blog more again.
I do still spend lots of my time gathering ideas and images and would love to share these … and really, its what I would rather be doing rather than my paid work :)
So I will be finding time again to update this more frequently. I wish I had over the last 6 weeks. But now I'm back!

… And we have all sorts of great fall goodies to get to!!

I know ... it's been a while again since my last post.
The only excuse I have is that its just been so nice lately that my focus has been on getting outside and taking advantage of this late-come summer weather!

That said, I've still been sussing out a number of drool-worthy pieces.

Just came across Alexander Wang's coated cobweb-knit dress on Net-a-porter.com.

This dress is just amazing! I'm so loving the deconstructed knits this season ... and I particularly love the way this version slouches off the body, but still keeps its body hugging shape. So good!

I don't usually love the Herve Leger bandage dresses -- don't hate them either but I definitely have a bit of a "meh" reaction to them.

But for some reason, I really love the dress Diane Kruger wore to the Inglorious Bastards premiere in Germany.

I love the square shoulders paired with the nude colour -- such a simple silhouette but the overall effect is stunning ...

As much as I hate to admit it, the less than stellar summer we have been having has made me already start to think about fall ... I'm going to try and resist it as much as possible .. but I had to share this scrunch boots from Etsy seller (Winnipeg-based) Spirocreations.

I do have a thing for moccasin style footwear -- they're just so easy to pull on -- and I'm loving the slouchiness of this pair.

In all fairness to the timing of this pick, I suppose they could be worn with a dress or shorts on cooler summer nights (we know all about those here in Toronto!) -- either way these would be a great pickup.

Sorry for my disappearing act -- my life got a little busy over the last couple of weeks with trips etc.

But I'm back now and have lots to share.

I'm still obsessing over the Vena Cava mesh-knit cardigan -- I haven't been able to track down the original but have in my search found a couple of fun substitutions.

New Zealand based Stolen Girlfriends Club also has a pretty rad version of the mesh sweater in their winter 2009 collection .... of course, I can't find this one online either ....

While in Vancouver I popped into the men's store Roden Gray. First, this store was one of the best men's stores I've been in in a while -- lots of pieces by smart designers like Philip Lim and Band of Outsiders. Stuff that you could see real guys wearing and actually looking good in. Plus, I found an awesome open knit sweater by Tim Hamilton. Yes, its meant for those of the male persuasion but it would definitely work for what I'm looking for.
.... a picture is proving elusive though I'm going to keep trying ... seems like this is one look that I'm going to have difficulty actually tracking down!

Sorry for the lack of posts lately -- I took a few days off to head out to Vancouver for a friend's wedding.

Lucky for me, the West Coast is actually getting summer this year so I was able to soak up some sun ... while everyone else back at home just got soaked!!

I have a few new things that I'll share over the next few days -- including a more reasonable version of the Vena Cava sweater!

I'm a bit of a basics girl -- I especially love slouchy sweaters and cardys that I can throw on over whatever I have on.

And when I find something I love I tend to wear it, until it wears out.

I think I've found my new fav -- Refinery 29 just posted a profile on Lisa Mayock and her closet.

As one of Vena Cava's designers she just exudes cool … and more importantly this profile drew my attention to their awesome mesh black boyfriend sweater.

Looks like a new shoulder silhouette is coming … or rather, already here.

A riff on the padded eighties look, this take is decidedly more subtle -- Philip Lim rocked some very square shoulders for his fall collections -- they almost have a pixie-ish peak:

It’s a closet essential to have at least one pair of basic black heels.
They tend to go with anything and can usually be worn both to work and out.

But while we may all love basic black pumps for their versatility sometimes they are little lacking in the oomph department.

I try to make environmentally sensitive decisions in my life: no AC; I walk to work; I recycle; I avoid over-packaged goods and I try to buy local whenever possible.

But there are certain things I'm not that interested in doing without: I like to travel which consumes loads of energy; I love my mangoes and avocados all year round (and I live in Canada) and I've never said no to a hot pair of anything because of environmental issues.

So, I was quite excited looking through Treehugger's round up of eco-conscious designers.

Only a few screamed crunchy granola to me -- the rest are actually quite stunning and would work in the most fashionable contexts.

Here are some favs:

Toronto-based Thieves uses hemp-blends and various organic materials to create her very urban take on environmentally friendly dressing.

Raquel Allergra creates great slouchy pieces -- tough yet feminine -- that loose nothing by adhering to the designers sense of environmental respect.

And another quick bit from their round-up is another local line Label. Very Erin Wasson-esque (including a look-a-like model) the collection is downtowner in the best sense: wearable and sexy!

It's probably fairly obvious by now that I love my accessories.

I'm especially a big fan of pieces that cross the line between fashion and art.

Lines by: davis does just that.

The Toronto-based designer Davis Khounnoraj translates his line sketches and drawings onto silk-screen bags, pouches and home décor items.

I'm loving his little pouches especially his rainbow brush stroke pouch, a steal at $18 USD.

His newest silk-screened bags have yet to make it into his Etsy store but they are just beautiful -- if you're around Toronto, they are currently on display at Bookhou on Dundas Street West.

Another quick hit from my NYC vacation: check out these great Pour La Victoire sandals ($219 at Bloomingdale's)

I just love the cheeky contrast between the oh-so-girly ruffles and the bad-ass zipper teeth.
These shoes would definitely scratch if pointed in the wrong direction :)

I would expect we'll see more and more zippers going into the fall: the new Wang bags are as utilitarian as in the spring and keep this vibe going.

For lack of a more appropriate word, fall seems to be going a bit gothic this year.
Lots of black leather and chains … and generally a tough attitude.
A reaction to the recession? Perhaps … Hot? Most definitely!

The most recent issue of V Magazine features a very tough (and Madonna-esque) looking Cameron Diaz (pictured above) that really captures this new feeling for fall (well, in spirit … not sure how practical cone bras are …)

Regardless, I'm going to start showcasing a few pieces that I think capture this new zeitgeist.

First up, New York Based A(r)mor.

Their simple and sexy chain pieces are really an updated version of body armor -- draped and vest-like, these accessories add edge to the simplest outfits.

Just back from my mini-vaca in New York -- and, as usual, it was amazing.

The weather was perfect -- which is especially lucky because the city has been hit by near constant rain.

Lots of, and maybe too much, good food and drink, plus some very fun shopping.

One of my fav finds was in the Barney's Coop in Soho by Taytu, a group of Ethiopian leather designers who were new to me.

At $475 USD this is not a cheap bag -- but it is definitely different: tie-dyed soft leather hobo bag, matched with an equally fun printed cotton interior. The bag is reversible, though honestly I think I would leave it on the tie-dyed side.

Just very cool looking and fresh.

Today I'm heading off for a mini vacation in New York!

New York is one of my favorite cities.
The Boy and I try to visit at least once a year.

We usually do a private rental in Lower East Side but in the spring we got word of an amazing deal at Thompson Hotel in LES so decided to stay there -- so I'm also really excited to stay at hotel this time!!

But even more exciting than a hotel stay . . . and all the amazing restaurants and bars . . . is, of course, the shopping!

Here are three of my favs in New York -- all with online stores for shopping before and after the trip!!

Pixiemarket.com: A tiny little shop in LES with a big impact. Lots of small indie designers that are hard to find elsewhere.

Oaknyc.com: I love love love Oak -- an awesome of mix of very upmarket (read expensive) designers with some smaller, more accessible brands. The aesthetic is very consistent throughout the store -- basic shapes, laid-back colours and prints, and generally lots of downtown cool!

Lolli by Reincarnation: My love for the slouchy bag is probably evident by now -- and these guys really were among the first, and in my opinion, they do it the best!

Laser cut jewelery is hardly new (I can definitely live without seeing another neon cassette charm tangling from the neck of a member of the under-20 set) but Montreal-based design duo Muji has approached the form with a more interesting perspective.

Among their current lines is "The Wind Beneath," a playful take on the current feather jewelery obsession, rendered, of course, in laser-cut acrylic.

My favorites though, come from the "Tragedy" line -- laser-cut black birds, belly up, complete with two two red teardrop beads.
The effect is beautiful and than startling.

And with price points for most firmly under $50, these are fun little indulgences we can all afford.

Well, summer has officially arrived in my city … and I hope it's heating up in yours too!
But it does bring to the forefront the very important issue of how to stay stylish -- and sweat free -- when everything around you is melting.

Here are some quick hits for a keep-cool-look, from bottom to top!

I've seen a number of women rocking these flats from Aldo (or potentially a more expensive version.) I especially love them in the white ... very crisp and clean looking, $58 at Aldo:

The best summer bags are light but big enough for summer day essentials. A classic hobo by Lolli by Reincarnation is the perfect slouchy bag, and they come in a range of colours, including champagne or white -- ideal summer hues. $300+ at Lolli by Reincarnation:

Summer in the city really can't be done without a cute dress to live in. While I love the bright colours that flood the streets as soon as the sun starts to shine, at a certain point its nice to just chill it all out a bit. Ashley Olsen showed up to the CFDA awards last week in a fabulous floor length orange dress -- the dress is from her own line The Row and I love both the colour and the vintage embellishments on the top.

In September one of my oldest and best friends is getting married.

She now lives in Montana so we'll be trekking out there for the wedding, which in itself is awesome!

I'm part of the wedding party and have been searching out dresses that I'm hoping might work.

The theme is "rustic western elegance" and the bride hasn't requested matching dresses.

She's wearing an ivory dress with burgundy silk accessories and a sunflower bouquet … so I'm thinking something neutral would work best …

just heard that Jimmy Choo will be partnering with H&M for a holiday line!

How crazy is that?!

The line will launch November 14th and will include -- obviously -- shoes and handbags, but also a clothing component.

I'm sure this will be another success for H&M but I can't decide how excited I personally am.

I like how the H&M collaborations in the past have been with more avante-garde designers (Stella, Viktor + Rolf) -- I felt like these partnerships were often about bringing interesting perspectives on design to the public.

Choo has never been one of my favs, but I will be interested to see how he translates his brand to H&M....

Ah .. Online browsing -- without you how would I get through my day?

Just dropped by Oak to see what's new.

They have a whole slew of very cool accessories, including studded wallets and lots of chains …

But, what got me very excited is a new batch of their house-line, Oak.

Soft cotton asymmetrical dresses (one sleeve longer than the other) and very cool extra deep cowl-neck tees round out my favs.

I'm not usually a fan of cowl-neck tops (flashes back to the late 90s and metallic attempts to fancy up jeans) but this one is so deep it works and the neck itself is more relaxed and modernized.

… And, of course, the big plus for the Oak line, its very affordable with most being under $100!

Just wanted to share another gem from Etsy ...

Check out this shop by Barcelona based gemmadegara (honestly, one of my fav things about Etsy is access to all these amazing international designers!)

The mask tank top is just so perfect for the summer: slouchy and comfy looking for the heat; but I also love the tribal motif, its subtle enough to be actually cool.

I seem to be on a bit of leather kick.

As much as I do love flirty summer dresses and fun colours, my preferred summer city outfit still tends to be dark skinny jeans and a slouchy tank.

And for that look, leather accoutrement always work!

I've been on the look-out for a while for a new handbag -- I'm really loving this one by Khoi Li.

The Scuba Bag is the perfect mix of soft black leather and light chains.

Definitely worth a pick-up -- hot style and supporting a young designer!

Following on the heels of Alexander Wang is an Etsy seller that definitely channels the same downtown vibe -- Montreal-based blackmarketbaby (love our home-grown gals!)

Designer Audrey Cantwell is a fashion student in Montreal.

Her line on Etsy is mostly leather and mesh -- its very slouchy cool, tough but still feminine.

I'm particularly lusting over this slouchy, hand-formed leather jacket -- at $250 USD its steal! And she does a vest as well!

Definitely go check out her line -- some very cute mesh dresses as well!

I love the T by Alexander Wang line.
Same Wang sensibility and styling for significantly less money.

Yes, its really just basics.
But, they are perfectly slouchy, cool basics.

I'm loving the mini pocket dress (pictured at left from La Garconne) -- especially in the gorgeous blue.

Wang tends toward the monochromatic most of the time -- but when he does use colour its so effective!

The muscle tees from the spring line are fab too -- just perfect for slouchy city days!

Just came across a fabulous jewelery designer on Etsy.
Based in Montreal, thisilk creates thoroughly unique necklaces, earrings and broaches from lace.

The mix of the delicate textile, with thisilk's very modern treatment is enthralling.

My favorites are her wonderfully long earrings and a drapey white lace necklace (pictured)

And nothings priced more than $45 USD -- and most under $40!!

The relatively new line (launched in 07) is designed by two friends, Hilary Rosenman and Barri Budin.
Available at a few shops in New York but also online through their own site Madisonharding.com
They do ship to Canada which is great!

vacation-ing

I love the concept of resort collections.
Developed to serve the needs of the very wealthy running away to warm-weather vacation spots while the rest of us are stuck in the doldrums of winter, the implication of these collections sort of sucks (ie me stuck in winter) but I do love the idea at the core of these collections.
The idea that, on your way into a vacation, we all want to buy new clothes to wear!

Whether its heading up north for a long weekend (need a cute hoodie to lounge around in) or a weekend visit to a nearby city (want a cute dress to wear out in New York), this impulse to shop for your vacation is one that I can sympathize with.

I think it speaks to our need to really change scenery, to separate here from there -- or maybe its just an excuse to go shopping!

Either way, I was checking out the 2010 Resort Collections and came across one image from Derek Lam's most recent collection.

Supposedly inspired by Rihanna, the collection is, according to Women's Wear Daily, full of the hot heat of the Caribbean -- sounds great and the one picture available looks great!

Hot colour and a great shape -- if the rest of the collection is like this, I can't wait to see more!

love makes you do crazy things

Ok ... on principal I'm not usually a fan of knockoffs.
I try to stay away from them as much as possible.
I firmly believe in the value of good quality and craftsmanship.
I have a pair of Loeffler Randall flats (picked up on sale!) from November 2007 that I've literally lived in -- they've now survived 2 slushy Toronto winters and a hot summer.
I have taken care of them -- including a new sole -- but in that time I was likely to go through at least 2 -3 pairs of cheaper flats (I walk a lot)

So, I do understand why its worth it to spend more on high quality items.

However, I also fall in love, sometimes easily.

And last year I feel in love with Pedro Garcia's shoe boot, called Paola: perfect heel height, tough looking but still feminine. I just loved these shoes.

After trying on the $550 shoe at Holt Renfrew, I went so far as to order in my correct size, only to decide that I was crazy and couldn't do it.

Fast forward to fall 2008 -- they still had them at Holt's, now on sale, but for $350. While a great deal, I couldn't justify it at the time.

Fast forward again to spring 2009, and imagine my surprise when walking into Nine West I come across these beauties -- an almost exact replicate for $140!

I would love to say that I only bought the knock-offs because the Pedro Garcia's could no longer be found ... but I have a feeling I might have bought them last year if they were available. Its really hard to justify a $400 difference ... and really, love does make you do crazy things.

and maybe its because I was brought up on -- and completely obsessed over -- the original 90210 ... but I'm really loving this dress:

its definitely old-school looking but somehow it works for me, especially with the slick zipper up the back.

I tried on something similar from D&G at holts the other day (... it was on sale .. and it was lunch .. I was killing time) and it was just fabulous on.

Am going to go back and try on this version -- bound to be tighter, but definitely younger and more downtown.

Just love it!! ... and, thanks to our market in the south, it is on sale (even if its still full price in Canada), so I might be able to grab this one!

neon dipped

Its hard to resist bright colours in the summer.
With warmer weather and more sun (well, usually, though not in this cold June so far) I always get the urge to lighten and brighten up.
This urge is usually indulged on my finger and toe nails.

I tend to stick to dark nails for most of the year -- deep reds and browns (I'm on my fourth bottle of the classic Lincoln Park) -- but around this time of year I always start to migrate towards the lighter end of the spectrum.
And this year I went straight to the brightest!

Yesterday I picked up the 4 pack of the Essie Neon collection and, so far, I LOVE IT!

The collection consists of 4 colours; 2 pinks, one brighter and more hot than the other, a day-glo yellow and an electric purple.

I'm wearing the Perky Purple today and its awesome. Essie polish tends to go on matte and its perfect for these bright colours - doesn't tone them down exactly, but it makes them less little girl and more grown-up.

I'm not usually seduced by flat sandals.
I generally find that a strappy sandal doesn't do much in terms of flattering anyone's feet.
I understand the need for something quick to pull on, on hot, sticky days -- but spending time and money on elaborate sandals has always been a bit beyond me.
I usually stick to a basic pair of black flip flops.

But the latest email from Inhabitat contained a link to a series of sandals (now carried on their site) by Melissa -- she of the sustainable jelly shoes -- all non-toxic, vegan and almost entirely recycled. And, best of all, cute and cheap!

I'm especially loving the Melissa Sin T-Strap sandal in yellow or black (only $59 USD!)... though I'm most partial to the black.

The made-in-Brazil sandals might make a sandal convert even out of me!

the look of summer

On Friday night, I dropped by the opening of an art show featuring photographic works by young Toronto photographer Lynsie Roberts.
The show, called "Coney Island of the Mind," featured shots taken at Coney Island during a recent visit.
The images are, for lack of a better word, dreamy -- soft angles, extreme saturated colours in some images, a sun-bleached look in others. Very evocative of the .feel of summer.
My favorite is a doped out looking Barbie doll, that almost seems to belong to a "Debbie does Coney Island" series.
I really love the way many of these pieces straddle the line between childish fun and the more sinister.

So of course I ran over at lunch to see if there was anything worth grabbing.
After scouring through all the racks though, I came away empty handed :(
Honestly, it's the worst when you really want to buy something but have no luck!

I have a confession to make.
It's not too shocking given today's fashion climate, but I love jumpsuits.

I've been victim to this obsession for over 5 years now.
If there's a jumpsuit in a store I'm bound to find it.

I gravitate to jumpsuits like bees to honey :)

Of course, loving jumpsuits doesn't mean I wear them -- I do own a few but they're regulated to that part of the closest where I keep the things I love but don't really wear (we all have those secrets, right?)

I just find something, maybe a little juvenile about them -- they are definitely hard to pull off and still look sophisticated. And I never seem to have those events where it's the perfect thing to pull on.

And yet, I'm trying right now to decide if I should purchase another one!

Le Train Bleu (one of my fav online stores -- go for a little visit) has a great jump suit that I've been stalking all spring.

It dropped in price a few weeks ago and they still have my size ....
I feel like this would be a great summer piece, but really, do I need another jump suit?

So. Here it goes. My first post.
Basically this is a blog about the things that keep me up at night;
mostly shoes … but a smattering of stylish things in general!

I spend a lot of my time searching out new designers, checking out hot clothes, sussing out new bars and restaurants.
I thought maybe it was time to try and get some of these things down on, uh, screen.

So here it goes. We'll see how this works out.
I've read somewhere that if you can make it through the first month, than you have a good chance of making it further. So, for now, that's my goal.
Talking to this empty space, of only me, until it might seem like this is worth reading.
It's what I've been doing so far ...
